The Switch 2 is the long-awaited successor to the Nintendo Switch. Released on March 3 2017, the Nintendo Switch is the third most sold console in the world being just under the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS, with over 150 million sold Worldwide! The successor to the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2, was announced on January 16, 2025, and got a full reveal of what’s to come on April 2, 2025. However, people were quickly noticing the price of the console itself along with controller replacements and the prices of the new games such as Mario Kart World, Kirby Air Riders, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.
The Nintendo Switch 2 itself costs $450 which is more than the original PlayStation 5, which only costs $350-$400. However, the general public was not upset about the price of the console itself, people were upset about the price of the games. Most video games cost $60, but the prices shown for games like Mario Kart World were closer to $80. The Joy-Cons for the switch originally cost $80 for two Joy-Cons, however the Switch 2 made its price for two Joy-Cons is around $90. But as for the pro controllers, just over $60 for the original Nintendo Switch, and for the Switch 2, a pro controller costs over $80. With the increased price for almost everything the original console had, people were rather upset, as it might make other game companies, primarily PlayStation and Xbox, to increase their prices as well.
So, is the Switch 2 too expensive? Well, not exactly. The console itself has several major improvements, ranging from more frames per second, a better screen allowing for high-resolution images, and 256 gigabytes of storage, much higher than the original Nintendo Switch, which only had 32 gigabytes of storage. The controllers are not too much more expensive than those made for the original Nintendo Switch. However, the games are too expensive, many people can hardly afford video games right now due to prices coming in at $60 per game. And the idea of PlayStation and Xbox increasing their prices to match Nintendo’s? Well, we are already seeing it with Xbox, making the prices of their games $80 to match Nintendo in price. So while the console itself may not be too expensive, the games that it comes with are.
