Theater and show choir on the rise?
By: McKenna Walker
Show choir and theater are a big staple of Urbandale High School. They help bring the community and students together. Both are good departments and help students express themselves and their creativity. It is not about what divides these two departments but rather how they help each other. Both of them have been around in Urbandale for quite some time and are both really beneficial to the school. They have been a good way for students to be active in schools without having to be in a sport or club although they are both not easy either and take a lot of practice and dedication in rehearsals for theater and show choir. Some students in both of these activities are determined and are hopeful to continue some of these departments outside of high school. Senior show choir member Kendall Mullins when I asked how both theater and show choir have impacted her plans after high school she responded, “Well definitely growing up I knew I wanted to pursue the musical arts, including musical theater, which show choir and doing the musicals has only bettered my understanding of how to successfully build myself as an artist. I have learned skills that will benefit me in the long run with my journey in college.” These two departments are really successful in show choir competitions or theater performances both offer a good set of skills. The only problem with these two departments is how much they are advertised within middle schools and in high school. Many students find out about the two departments after things have been scheduled and people have been chosen into the different roles or choirs. Theater has not been advertised that much in middle school while show choir has Pizzazz and Ambition you can find many posters around the school talking about theater near the band hallway. Both of these departments should be advertised around the school and in connections. They should also be talked about because they are both enjoyable to watch and be a part of. They also help you meet people and be a part of something within the school.
